If you aren't keen on getting your tongue pierced,
perhaps you can consider a lip piercing. The Dogon tribes in Mali consider lip piercings to be way of
commemorating their ancestor’s spirits. Even the Aztecs and Mayans regarded lip piercings as highly
respectable. In today's society we can seen lip piercings on people you see on the street and celebrities you
see in movies. Lip piercings are a way that people express themselves.
Because lip piercings are seen aren't seen as
highly as they were in the past, they are often associated with an outsiders image. However, lip piercings
are a serious decision and come with plenty of risks and consequences. Unfortunately, a lip piercing isn't
something you can just remove if you get tired of it so let's look at this type of piercing a bit
more.

Before getting your lip pierced you definitely want
to check out a list of potential piercers. They should be certified with a recognized certificate from your
country, APP (association of professional piercers) if you are in the USA. These groups help educate and keep
rules so that piercing is a safer event. You should always pick a piercing parlor that is extremely clean.
The piercers themselves should sanitize their hands and use gloves. All of the needles and equipment should
be sterilized. If not, you could end up with a life changing disease or infection.
There is some debate on where the placement of the
piercing should be. The most common place is on the lower lip. There is enough meat there that the piercing
shouldn't contact your gums. If it does contact your gums it could cause problems down the
road.
Some people choose to have a labret piercing. This
piercing is actually just below the lip itself. This one is considerably risky because it places it even
closer to your gums. You might have even seen some people have labrets above the upper lip. I read somewhere
the reason they do that is because it resembles Marilyn Monroe's famous mole. Hence, they have called it the
Monroe piercing.
There are other types of mouth piercings such as
Snakebites and Angel bites but you should take some time to consider where you want the piercing. If you did
decide to remove it in the future it will leave a mark and possibly leave you with an ugly looking piece of
scar tissue. You also should consider the way it might affect the way you eat, drink, or speak. You may even
consider trying a fake lip ring to see if you like it. Whatever you do, do the research and you will be
ensured a safe and wonderful looking lip piercing.
